New Orleans Breastfeeding Project

It’s World Breastfeeding Week! Did you know that the World Health Organization recommends continued breastfeeding to two years of age and beyond? Sadly, the breastfeeding rates in Louisiana are the lowest in the country. Although the researched benefits for breastfeeding are abundant, for many women, breastfeeding isn’t the easy choice that it should be. One challenge that I had never thought about before this project is that many women in our city have never seen anyone breastfeeding. Misinformation is passed through friends and family, making the problem worse. It definitely got me thinking about the importance of breastfeeding in public! It’s not just the easy choice when you’re out and baby is hungry – nursing in public is important for society!
This spring I was able to partner with the Mary Amelia Center and the City Health Department in a project promoting breastfeeding. We worked with several moms and their happy and healthy breastfed babies!

Are you interested in a breastfeeding session with your little one? Plans are underway for some breastfeeding mini sessions in the fall! Contact me to receive the details!
